The parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) is one of the two branches of the autonomic nervous system, responsible for regulating the body’s involuntary functions and promoting relaxation. It acts as the body’s “rest and digest” system, countering the effects of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS), which triggers the body’s “fight or flight” response to stress and threats.

The PNS functions to slow down heart rate, lower blood pressure, stimulate digestion, and conserve energy. When the PNS is activated, the body enters a state of relaxation and calmness, allowing for rest, recovery, and optimal functioning of various bodily systems.

Drawing kolam can help promote relaxation and activate the parasympathetic nervous system through several mechanisms:

  1. Focused Attention: Creating intricate kolam designs requires focused attention and concentration. This act of concentration can shift the focus away from stressors and anxieties, helping to activate the PNS and promote relaxation.
  2. Mindfulness and Meditation: Drawing kolam is often seen as a meditative practice. Engaging in this creative activity can induce a state of mindfulness, where individuals become fully present in the moment, reducing stress and calming the mind.
  3. Artistic Expression: Expressing creativity through drawing kolam can be a form of self-expression and emotional release. Engaging in artistic activities has been shown to have a positive impact on mental well-being and can activate the PNS response.
  4. Sense of Accomplishment: Completing a kolam design can provide a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction, triggering the release of positive neurotransmitters like dopamine. This can further enhance relaxation and well-being.
  5. Stress Reduction: The process of drawing kolam is often considered soothing and therapeutic. The repetitive and rhythmic movements involved in creating the design can lower stress levels and promote relaxation.

Overall, drawing kolam can help activate the parasympathetic nervous system, promoting relaxation and reducing the body’s stress response. This practice can have significant benefits for mental and emotional well-being, contributing to a sense of calm and balance in daily life.
